Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about boondocking, free camping, and getting the most from the app.
What is boondocking?
Boondocking is camping without hookups — no water, electric, or sewer connections — usually for free on public land. It's also called dry camping, dispersed camping, or wild camping. RVers boondock on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, in national forests, and at informal pull-offs. What boondocking means and the BLM 14-day limit.
Is boondocking free?
Most boondocking is free. Dispersed camping on BLM and U.S. Forest Service land is typically no-cost for up to 14 days. Some areas require a free permit, and developed campgrounds charge a fee. The DryRig app labels each site's category so you know what to expect.
Where can I camp for free?
You can camp for free on most BLM land, in national forests, at some city parks and fairgrounds, and overnight at many Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, truck stops, and rest areas. The app maps tens of thousands of free and low-cost options across all 50 U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
Can I sleep overnight at Walmart in an RV?
Many Walmart stores allow free overnight RV parking, but it's set per-store and some locations prohibit it due to local ordinances. Always call ahead or check posted signs. The app flags overnight parking options including stores, truck stops, and rest areas.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. You can download map regions and listings before heading out, so the app keeps working where there's no cell signal — which is exactly where boondockers tend to be.
How do you know the cell coverage at a campsite?
Coverage is grounded in public data — the FCC Mobile Broadband Coverage map and Ookla Open Data — to estimate carrier coverage at a location. When we don't have coverage data for a spot, we show that clearly instead of guessing.
Why do low-clearance bridges matter for RVs?
Tall RVs, fifth wheels, and motorhomes (often 12–13.5 ft) can strike low overpasses and tunnels, causing serious damage. The app maps low-clearance points sourced from OpenStreetMap and the National Tunnel Inventory so you can route around them.
How much does the DryRig app cost?
The app is free to download with core map and search features. Optional Pro features (extra offline regions, unlimited favorites and trips) are available via subscription.
